There's no one way to grow up.
You don't need to have everything figured out. You don't have to follow somebody else's path. And you shouldn't have to change who you are just to feel welcomed, respected or supported.
This is a space to understand what growing up can involve, what shapes your experiences, and what the people around you should help make possible.
No quiz to pass. No personal details to share. Explore at your own pace.
So, what actually is youthhood?
Youthhood is the part of life when you're exploring who you are, forming relationships, trying things, experiencing change and finding your way towards adulthood.
It's about more than age. Your youthhood is also shaped by the people around you, what you can access, where you live, and whether you feel safe, included and listened to.
Different doesn't mean wrong.
There's no single timeline for confidence, independence, friendships, interests or deciding what comes next. Some people discover things earlier; others take longer or change direction.
Your surroundings matter.
Transport, money, school, family circumstances, accessible spaces and supportive adults can open doors — or make things harder. Not every barrier is yours to solve.
Look at the same moment from different angles.
Choose an everyday example. No need to share anything about yourself.
You grow in more ways than you might realise.
Youth development is about how young people grow, learn, connect, build confidence and discover possibilities — through everyday life as well as education.
You don't need to be good at everything. You can learn through interests, new experiences, friendships, challenges, rest, conversations and opportunities to try again.
Finding what matters to you
Interests, identity, curiosity, creativity and trying things without needing to be the best.
Building relationships
Belonging, friendships, trusted adults and learning how to navigate difference.
Growing with support
Skills, confidence, choices, independence, wellbeing and help when life changes.
Development isn't a race.
You can be confident in one part of life and unsure in another. You can need support and still be independent. Growing doesn't have to look impressive to anyone else to matter.
You weren't meant to figure everything out alone.
Different adults, services and communities can help with different parts of growing up. They should listen, explain, work together where appropriate and help you find the support or opportunities you need.
That doesn't mean making every choice for you. Your views, preferences and boundaries still matter.
You should be able to ask questions, express what matters to you and receive understandable explanations. Adults and services should not expect you to carry the job of making the whole system work.
A fair chance doesn't always mean the same support.
Two people can be offered the same opportunity and still face very different challenges in reaching it. Fairness means noticing those differences and responding to real needs.
NAYD uses the idea of Natural Equity: young people should be treated with equal dignity, while recognising that their situations and the support they need may not be identical.
Respect and support aren't things you have to earn by fitting in.
You should be treated with dignity, taken seriously, supported through change and given fair opportunities to grow. These ten expectations are a helpful starting point for conversations.
They're a youth-friendly summary, not a complete statement of every legal right or a replacement for safeguarding or advice.

If something doesn't feel right, you're allowed to ask for an explanation or speak to someone you trust. This website can't provide individual support, but the people and services responsible for your wellbeing should help you understand your options.
You've got a place to start.
You now know a little more about youthhood, development, fairness and what support can look like. You don't need to remember every word before exploring further.
